March 12, 2020 –
Many of you have reached out to express your concern regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019nCoV), and HU has listened. After careful consideration, and after weighing a variety of considerations, first and foremost the safety and health of the Harrisburg University community, we have decided to move all graduate education activities and programs for the weekend of March 13th and 14th to our online platforms in Canvas and AdobeConnect. There will be no face-to-face sessions. You will not be required to travel. The decision currently only impacts the March 13th and 14th weekend. HU will provide further guidance as the situation develops.
Federal guidelines for international students studying in the US have shifted to allow for greater flexibility in how programs are delivered and managed. Under the new (temporary) federal guidelines, students will still need to be monitored (e.g., attendance taken and verified), show academic progress (through their work), and maintain their full-time course load at 6 credits. Please be assured that if you are an international graduate student studying at HU, you will maintain your visa status and be allowed to remain in the US to study and work as long as you attend the mandatory online orientation and continue to attend and fully participate in classes online to include attending Executive Sessions online versus in person. Should you have any questions, please review the information available at https://isohelp.harrisburgu.edu and generate a new support request if you have specific questions. You can also call (717) 901-5154 between 9 am and 5 pm EST.
New students who need to obtain their I-20 will not need to come to campus and will receive additional communication in the coming days. Please note, I-20s will not be released unless a student is registered for classes and has paid the full tuition.
Please be patient with us as this situation is fluid and changing rapidly. Over the next few days, additional information will be sent to your HU email address, including:
- A personal message including what requirements you still need to address prior to the semester start.
- Links to the mandatory online orientation with presentations from key University offices.
- An invitation to an online orientation Question and Answer session where you will be able to ask questions directly to representatives from HU Graduate Student Services, International Student Office, Records and Registration, and Business Office.
We will continue working closely with community partners and follow the guidance of state and federal health agencies, and we will update the campus community as additional information becomes available. The University will reassess these interim measures on a weekly basis. We are focused on ensuring our students succeed academically with as little interruption as possible while safeguarding everyone’s health, safety, and welfare.
Please note that any HU student who is experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, or academic stress as a result of this issue should contact the BHS Student Assistance Program. They can log in via the app/web, https://portal.bhsonline.com, or call 800-327-2251. The username is HarrisburgU. Outreach to BHS is confidential, and each student is assigned a master’s level clinician as a care coordinator. BHS will provide HU students with quality, in-the-moment support.
